Vietnam says “ready to cooperate with the US” in Indo-Pacific

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam Le Thi Thu Hang.

Vietnam has just voiced its interest and desire to cooperate with the US, a few days after Washington announced the Indo-Pacific strategy in which Vietnam is mentioned as one of the leading partners in the world with which the US will strengthen the relationship.

Vietnam wishes that cooperation initiatives in the Indo-Pacific contribute to peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region, respect international law, and respect the rights and interests of the political community worthy of all countries; ensuring ASEAN’s central role in the evolving regional architecture,” Thanh Nien newspaper quoted Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang as saying at a regular press conference on February 17.

Previously, on February 11, the White House announced a new Indo-Pacific strategy with 5 focuses that the United States pursues: a free and open Indo-Pacific region, expand cooperation, promote prosperity, and strengthen the security and resilience of the region.

The strategy aims to further solidify the US position in the region while strengthening the region as a whole in the process. The strategy also outlines sustainable and innovative cooperation with allies, partners, and institutions inside and outside the region.

The 12-page strategy document mentions Vietnam as one of the leading partners in the connection clause of the strategy. Accordingly, the US will build collective capacity both inside and outside the region through “strengthening relationships with leading partners in the region, including India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam and island nations in the Pacific”.

At a press conference on February 17, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam also expressed concern and desire to promote cooperation with the US and partners to promote efforts to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic, serve economic recovery, climate change response, and other areas to ensure peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
