European countries warn Vietnamese instant noodles “contain banned chemicals”

Vietnamese instant noodles products have been present in many markets around the world

Three European countries, Germany, Poland, and Malta have just sent a warning to Vietnam about its instant noodle products containing chemicals exceeding EU regulations and announced the recall of imported instant noodles and pho confectionery shipments, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported.

Specifically, Germany warned of chicken-flavored instant noodles, curry-flavored instant noodles of Asia Foods Joint Stock Company (Asia Foods); Poland warns of chicken-flavored instant noodles of Vietnam Food Industry Joint Stock Company (Vifon); Malta warns against Nguyen Gia branded noodle products.

These warnings were told by Mr. Ngo Xuan Nam – deputy director of the National Office of Inquiry and Inquiry on Sanitation, Epidemiology, and Phytosanitary (SPS), Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, told the newspaper.

Accordingly, Germany pointed out that ethylene oxide, which is a banned chemical, has a concentration higher than the allowable limit of the European Union; and Malta believes that Nguyen Gia’s dry noodle product is made from “illegal genetically modified rice” also according to this newspaper. Poland has recalled the product and Malta has returned the shipment.

The violation of EU food safety regulations by Vietnamese enterprises will make it difficult for the SPS Vietnam Office and specialized agencies to reduce the frequency of testing Vietnamese instant noodles into the EU,” Mr. Nam was quoted as saying.

He said that the SPS Vietnam Office had informed the state management agency about instant noodles, the Science and Technology Department of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, about this, requesting this agency to inspect and request manufacturers to review the stages to determine the cause and take remedial measures, also according to Tuoi Tre.

Previously, on June 13, the European Union announced that it would continue to maintain the requirement for additional food safety certificates and keep a 20% inspection frequency for instant noodle products. from Vietnam.

In addition to the European market, Vietnam’s noodle, vermicelli, and pho noodle products are also available in the US market, including products of Vifon and Nguyen Gia.

In 2021, a very popular instant noodle product in Vietnam, Acecook’s Hao Hao branded spicy and sour shrimp noodles, was warned by the EU that the ethylene oxide content was so high that it had to be recalled and destroyed.
