Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh meets US President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the G7 Extended Conference in Hiroshima

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, during his working visit at the invitation in Hiroshima, met a number of heads of state from other countries, including US President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Zelensky.

According to the Vietnam News Agency, the meeting between the Vietnamese PM and the President of the United States took place on the afternoon of May 20 in Hiroshima. The main content of the meeting was that the two sides agreed to maintain the exchange of delegations at all levels, especially high-level.

PM Chinh’s side reiterated that Vietnam-US relations have recently developed positively, with a focus on cooperation in the field of economy and trade. Meanwhile, it is reported that Mr. Biden’s side highly appreciated the results of the phone call between him and General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong of the Communist Party of Vietnam on March 29.

The Vietnam News Agency also reported that on May 21, PM Chinh had a brief meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

At the meeting, Chinh told President Zelensky that Vietnam’s consistent stance is to respect the UN Charter and international law, especially the principles of respecting the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the states, non-interference in internal affairs, non-use of force and threat of force, all disputes should be resolved by peaceful means. Vietnam hopes relevant parties will soon end the conflict, resume dialogue, and settle disputes by peaceful means.

Chinh also expressed his gratitude to the Government of Ukraine for supporting the Vietnamese community in Ukraine.

As for Russia’s attack on Ukraine since February 24, 2022, Vietnam has had six votes at the UN Council on resolutions related to this armed conflict. In which, there were four times Vietnam abstained, once voted against and once voted for.

Specifically, on March 1, 3022, Vietnam abstained from voting on a resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. On March 24, the UN voted on a resolution calling on Russia to end hostilities, protect civilians and the international community, and increase humanitarian aid to Ukraine; Vietnam abstained. On April 7, Vietnam voted against a resolution to exclude Russia from the UN Human Rights Council. On October 12, a resolution calling on countries around the world not to recognize Russia’s annexation of four Ukrainian territories was abstained by Vietnam. On February 23, 2023, the United Nations passed a resolution calling for an end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and Vietnam again chose the abstention. And most recently, on April 26, Vietnam voted in favor of the resolution on Cooperation between the UN and the Council of Europe.
